1. Hike the Kalalau Trail to Hanakapi'ai Beach. The hike is 4 miles round trip with absolutely spectacular views. Before you reach Hanakapi'ai Beach you will notice a memorial to those who have drowned at this beach - may this be a caution as to the magnitude of the surf and strength of the current. In the winter months there often is no beach to speak of but watching the waves crashing against the rocks is a delightful event! You can continue on to Hanakapi'ai Falls but be prepared for an additional 4 miles round trip of strenuous hiking. You will be amply rewarded however, once you reach the falls. To reach the trailhead, drive to Ke'e Beach and park. The trailhead is on the left before you reach the sand of Ke'e Beach. We recommend starting out as early as possible so that you can be leisurely about the whole thing! Check conditions in the winter - we have heard that there have been times where the surf is so high the trail is closed.

2. Helicopter ride with Inter-Island Helicopters - reserve in advance: 1-800-656-5009. No doors make this trip absolutely spectacular. Web address: www.interislandhelicopters.com

3. Snorkeling. Our favorite spot is Hideaways Beach in Princeville (public access is next to the tennis courts by Pu'u Poa - towards the Princeville Hotel, on your right). Other great north shore spots are Tunnels Beach and Ke'e Beach.

4. Best beach for walking - Secret Beach. The surf can be rough, especially in the winter months - but stunning. . Watch for whales and/or dolphins in the early morning hours by the cove near the Kilauea Lighthouse. Although signs will indicate otherwise, clothing seems to be optional at Secret Beach - though usually very few people can be found, dressed or otherwise.

5. Sunsets. - anywhere you can grab one! For romance, try the deck or Lobby Bar at The Princeville Hotel. Get there at least 30 minutes before sunset for a good spot. They serve great drinks and pupu’s if you're there early enough to get a seat. For socializing and music, head to The Happy Talk Lounge at the Hanalei Bay Resort - popular with the locals. For a more peaceful atmosphere, watch the sunset from your private lanai.

6. A must treat is Shave Ice. Our favorite spot is Shave Ice Paradise in Hanalei. If you're an ice cream lover try it with the Macadamia Nut Ice Cream on the bottom.

7. A boat trip. Our favorite is Holo Holo Charters. Based out of Fort Allen on the West Side. Dolphin and whale spotting are a favorite treat! Web address: www.holoholocharters.com.

8. Great local trip would be to any Farmer's Market. On the North Shore: Tuesday's in Hanalei at 2:00pm - about a mile or so past town on the left, can't miss it; Thursday's at the Kilauea Neighborhood Center on Keneke off Lighthouse Road at 4:30pm. Be sure to get to them early before all the "good stuff" gets taken! Good prices, fresh produce and support for the locals.

9. Kayaking. This will be weather and surf dependent. A good trip is down the Wailua River veering to the right, and then hiking to Secret falls. Reserve kayaks in advance to ensure availability. Check out: www.kauaiwailuakayak.com for tour suggestions and equipment rental.

10. What is a vacation without spoiling and pampering yourself? Why not try a traditional Hawaiian Lomi Lomi Massage? The St. Regis Resort offers a "menu" of services ranging from treatments at the spa to oceanside cabana massage. Click here for a Day Spa Menu Brochure

11. Hawaii Movie Tour - vans take you to the many spots where films were produced on the island; including Jurassic Park, Six Days Seven Nights and South Pacific to name a few. Check out www.hawaiimovietour.com (808-822-1192 or 800-628-8432).

12. Seafood Buffet at St. Regis Resort - excellent food, great views.
